What is a Chenille chevron?
The Chevron can be defined as a ‘V’ shaped character either pointing up or down although; most commonly it is used as pointing downwards. When the chevron symbol is used in combination with a Varsity letter, on varsity letterman jackets, it is called a chenille chevron-if it is crafted of chenille, or a varsity award chevron. Chenille chevrons used in academics and athletics denote the number of years that the wearer has held a particular distinction. For instance, a player who has been giving consistent and excellent performance for 4 years is awarded a varsity letter and four chevrons.

The usage and design of the Chenille Chevron
The chenille chevron is seldom used on its own. It is combined with the initials, colors and emblems of the school, college or university and the image that the institute or sports team wishes to portray.
These days the designing of varsity award chevrons has evolved almost into an art form. The usual material used to construct the chevron is chenille or felt. Several styles like baroque, avante garde, art deco are used to give the design a specific characteristic in tandem with the personality of the individual or the image that the sports team wishes to convey. History of Chenille letters
The history of embroidering the chenille letter on the varsity letterman jacket dates back to 1865 when for the first time the Harvard university baseball team sported a huge “H” fashioned in old English on their uniform of gray colored flannel jerseys. Later, in 1875 the football team also took up the practice of sporting the letter “H” on their uniforms.

The schools, colleges, universities, and different sports teams have their own stringent criteria when it comes to awarding the award letter. For instance, football players have to participate in atleast 90 games in a season and the basketball players have to play in atleast 50% of the games played in a season.
