Award Letters - The Emblem of Excellence
|
Become the part of Great History
Award letters can said to have originated in 1865, when the Harvard baseball team embroidered old English 'H' on the gray flannel shirt. And later was adopted by the football team in 1875. For almost 25 years following its introduction in 1875, certain players playing in the most important games (Yale or Princeton) were allowed by the captain to keep the jersey as an award. Players, who did not play in any important game, had to return the jersey at the season's end. According to some researchers, the necessity and later popularity of varsity letters (the most common form of award letters) came into being with the beginning of organised sports, due to which there was a need of uniforms. |

Award Letters
A further need for identification was satisfied using various emblems and letters. Since then it has become customary in the United States, to award Varsity letters for excellence in school, college and university activities. The award is in the design of a large letter also called the Chenile letter (in the form of a monogram), using the school initials and colors.
This letter is usually embroidered on a specially crafted jacket called the letterman jacket. Such letters were earlier also embroidered on a cardigan or pullover sweater. Several media like felt insignia, modelled pins, or bars are added to make the design more ornamental. Usually, students are awarded only one letter but sometimes even multiple distinctions are awarded to exceptional students.
This practice of awarding varsity letters to the qualifying high school or college athletes, who have achieved a specific level of participation in US Sports on a varsity athletic team, or in most school-sponsored groups, gave birth to the term letterman. As this practice involved awarding the participants a cloth letter, which is the school’s initial in the form of a Chenile letter, to be placed on a “letter sweater”.
Criteria for Award Letters
In order to give the 'lettermen' special distinction as compared to the others, the schools have a minimum established level of participation, in a team's matches. Only then, the award letter is given to them. For instance, in American football and basketball, in a ten game season, the player player should have participated in at least twenty of the forty played quarters. On the other hand, in individual sports like tennis and golf, the players have to have participated in one half or sometimes one third of all matches contested. Hence, award letters are now the popular way of awarding recognition to deserving students.
