Graduation cap and gown for official citation ceremony

Thinking of dress codes for different occasions, one of the important spheres of one’s life that strikes you is honoring successful students and awarding them degrees. It’s a proud moment in one’s life. The dress code obviously needs to match the mood and the spirit since it is a major milestone in a student’s career.

Evolution of the dress code including graduation cap and gown

It is imperative that we look at the history of graduation cap and gown, which is quite intriguing. Perhaps all of us are not aware of the fact that academic dress code first came into reality almost eight centuries ago when early Universities were formed in Europe. Their job was to promote and to honor excellence in the academic field.

The standards for deciding the levels of excellence were developed and so also the dress code including cap and gown. The academic dress became sophisticated and was slowly modified. Wearing gowns became a common practice after gowns were declared as the official dress of academics in 1321. There were modifications made on the long gowns, hoods that were used by Universities for recognizing the different grades of scholars.

The guidelines for wearing gowns have changed over a period of time. The representative’s body of American institutions in 1895 formed the Intercollegiate Commission aiming to standardize the academic dress. The Intercollegiate Code has been revised regularly. The crux of the matter is that fixed norms for cap and gown exist.
